Quilted Valentine’s Day Cards: A Quick & Easy Handmade Card Tutorial

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and this year feels extra special in our house. It’s the very first year my son is participating in a Valentine’s Day card exchange at school, and as soon as the email from his class landed in my inbox, I knew I wanted to make something handmade, heartfelt, and just a little bit quilty. If you’re looking for a creative, kid-friendly way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, these quilted Valentine’s Day cards are the perfect project.

This quilted Valentine’s Day card tutorial is quick and easy to put together, beginner-friendly, and a fantastic way to use up fabric scraps and batting leftovers from previous quilting projects. Each card measures approximately 5¼in x 6in, making them the perfect size for classroom Valentine exchanges, handmade gifts, or keepsakes for loved ones. Whether you’re sewing for your child’s classmates, quilty friends, or family, these fabric Valentine cards add a warm, handmade touch that store-bought cards just can’t match.

Below you’ll find a step-by-step tutorial on how to make quilted Valentine’s Day cards, including a full supply list and free printable templates to get you started.

DIRECTIONS

Read through all the directions before you start.

Step 1: Download and print the paper Valentine’s Day heart card templates and labels here**. Print one-sided.

This document contains three pages:

  • Page 1: Quilted Valentine’s Day Card – Quilted Heart (the larger, outer heart)
  • Pages 2 & 3: Two options for the card message
    • One version includes a printed message with space to write a personalized note
    • The other version includes blank hearts so you can write your own message

These smaller hearts will be referred to as the Message Heart and the larger heart template will be referred to as Quilted Heart throughout this blog post.

Step 2: Using paper scissors, cut along the solid lines of both the Quilted Heart and Message Hearts. Set templates aside for later steps.

Step 3: Create one quilt sandwich using coordinating quilting cotton for the front and back, with batting in the middle.

Baste using your preferred method. I used spray basting for this tutorial.

Step 4: Secure the Quilted Heart template to the quilt sandwich using pins or pattern weights. With a fabric pen or pencil, trace as many Quilted Heart outlines as you can fit, leaving a little space between each heart.

Step 5: Using the traced Quilted Heart outlines as a guide, mark quilting lines with a ruler and heramarker. I used a 1-inch grid for this project.

Quilt the grid lines, then edge stitch just inside the Quilted Heart outline to secure the quilt sandwich before cutting.

Step 6: Cut on the marked guidelines.

Step 7: Apply a thin layer of project glue to the back of a Message Heart. Position it on top of a Quilted Heart to temporarily hold it in place.

Step 8: Edge stitch around the Message Heart, taking your time around curves and points.

Step 9: Using pinking shears, trim around the edge of the Quilted Heart. It’s okay if you cut through the edge stitching from Step 5.

Step 10 (optional): Return to the sewing machine and stitch around the Quilted Heart between the raw edge and the Message Heart to further secure all layers.

Step 11: Trim loose threads and decorate your quilted Valentine’s Day card. My son just turned two, so our cards were finished with heart stamps and plenty of toddler scribbles.

Handmade Valentine’s Day cards are such a meaningful way to celebrate the season of love, and these quilted Valentine’s Day cards make the process both fun and approachable. Whether you’re sewing alongside your kids, making classroom Valentine cards, or simply looking for a creative scrap-busting quilting project, this tutorial is a lovely way to slow down and make something from the heart.

I love that this project combines quilting, paper crafting, and personalization—and that it turns fabric scraps and batting leftovers into keepsakes that will be cherished long after Valentine’s Day has passed. If Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and you’re searching for a quick, easy, and handmade idea, these quilted cards are a wonderful place to start.
