Quilted Halloween Goodie Bag Tutorial

Halloween is just around the corner, and what better way to hand out candy or store goodies than with a spooky-themed, handmade drawstring treat bag! In this tutorial, we’ll be using the Deadly Sweet quilt block as the centerpiece for the bag, bringing a fun and festive vibe to your Halloween celebrations. This tutorial walks you through creating one quilted goodie bag, perfect for trick-or-treating or as a fun reusable gift bag.

The second half of the instructions will reference my Quilted Drawstring Bag tutorial, as we'll apply the same principles for assembling the bag. But before we dive into the steps, let's gather our materials and take a look at the cutting directions.

  • One Deadly Sweet quilt block. Download the pattern here if you haven’t yet.
  • Sewing machine (with zigzag stitch function, if you don’t know have access to a serger / overlock sewing machine). The purpose of the zigzag stitch (or serger) is to enclose the raw edges of the drawstring bag casing.
  • Serger (optional)
  • Rotary cutter
  • Cutting mat
  • Quilting ruler(s) – preferably a medium and small sized ruler, i.e. 6in x 12in and 6½in x 6½in.
  • Coordinating thread(s). 50 weight for piecing, general construction, quilting.
  • Heramarker
  • Scissors for fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric pencil or marker
  • Pins
  • Seam ripper
  • Snips (optional)
  • Iron
  • Basting spray (for spray basting) or safety pins (for pin basting)
  • Batting – two (2) 9in squares.
  • Light-weight fusible interfacing (optional) – one (1) 7in square. this additional layer can be added to the back of the Deadly Sweet quilt block to prevent the face from distorting while quilting.
  • One safety pin
  • Fabric, quilting cotton – Fabric requirements outlined below exclude fabric requirements for the quilt block. Those are supplied in the Deadly Sweet quilt block pattern, which can be downloaded here. Requirements are in bold textand based on 42in WOF (width of fabric) and cutting directions are in bullet points.

Fabric A
(Backside of Bag Exterior)

¼ yard* or 1 fat eighth

  • One (1) square, 6½in

Fabric B
(Lining of Bag Exterior)

¼ yard* or 1 fat eighth

  • Two (2) squares, 6½in

Fabric C
(Bag Exterior Binding)

⅛ yard or 1 fat eighth

  • One (1) rectangle, 2in x 18in

Fabric D
(Drawstring Casing)

⅛ yard or 1 fat eighth

  • Two (2) rectangles, 4½in x 6½in

Fabric E
(Drawstring Ties)

⅛ yard or 1 fat eighth

  • Two (2) rectangles, 2in x 18in

*Note: Do not substitute ⅛ yard (12 cm) for Fabrics A and B requirements, even though a fat eight is sufficient. This is because ⅛ yard (12 cm) is not wide enough for larger cuts.
